Sinks & taps

The fittings you touch most often, and the ones most worth trying before you choose. Ours are plumbed in and working.

Plan the water place first. Everything else in the kitchen works around it.

Sink, tap, waste, dishwasher and recycling bins belong within a pace of each other, and the decisions interact: an undermounted bowl needs a worktop that can carry the cut-out, a boiling tap needs a tank under the cupboard, and a tall spout needs headroom under a wall unit.

We resolve all of it on the plan, then plumb it ourselves. Come and try the taps in the showroom — a boiling-water tap in particular makes far more sense in the hand than on paper, and the soft bubbles of a sparkling water tap are to die for.

Decisions worth making early

How it is mounted

Undermounted gives the cleanest line. Inset, with its own drainer, works with all worktop types including laminate, while a sink fully integrated into a Corian worktop is seamless and costs the most.

Bowl material

Stainless is hard-wearing but will scratch, composite hides limescale, and ceramic is the most traditional: being clay-based and moulded, it can have slightly uneven sides.

One bowl or two

One large bowl beats two small ones, especially for soaking big oven trays. A half bowl earns its place if you have a waste disposal.

Under-sink space

A boiling-water tank, filter and waste all live under the sink. There’s still room for dishwasher tablets and a few cleaning products, but plan the recycling bins somewhere else.

The Blanco Unit

The Blanco Unit

Sink, boiling-water system, waste and in-cupboard organisation specified together as one unit, which fits in a sink base as long as the stop tap isn’t in the way.
