“It's a people business,” said Martin in 1992. Thirty years on, little about that has changed.
Kitchensmiths was founded in 1992 by Martin Smith and Tony Smith: one a cabinetmaker turned designer, the other a fitter every customer in Cambridge already knew by name. The company has never really departed from that combination.
Two Smiths and a name
Martin took an apprenticeship with a bespoke cabinetmaker at sixteen. In 1982 he moved into kitchens, spending eleven years at Cambridge-based Kitchen Consultants, where he became a designer and met Tony. A decade later the two went into business together. The name — obvious in hindsight — came from Martin’s father-in-law.
One selling, one fitting
“We were in a very strong position when we started out,” Martin says. “Tony doing the fitting, me having experience from both sides.” Tony had spent fifteen years at Kitchen Consultants and had dealt with every single customer personally. Nothing was ever too much trouble for him.
In their first year they sold almost double what they had forecast. A year later they won their first award.
Still perfect, thirty years later
“One of our first customers remembered us from Kitchen Consultants,” Martin recalls. “Last year they came back and asked us to modify it a bit. I saw the kitchen we’d fitted in ’93 and it was still perfect. New worktops, retiled, and it looked brilliant again.” It is the standard we still design to.
Moving to Histon
When Bar Hill began redevelopment, we took the chance to move to much larger premises in the centre of Histon, with room for far more working displays, and the showroom we still occupy today.
Tony passed away in 2003. His care and consideration remain the keystones of how the company works.
The next generation
Dan Smith joined the family business, taking on day-to-day management and financial strategy. The third Smith, and the second generation, in a company the family has run since 1992.
Twenty-five years of Clare and Alex
Alex Baldwin joined in the September, aged twenty-two and straight out of an interior design degree at Kingston. Clare Chapman followed a month later, having read geography at Hull and worked in coastal research in Cambridge before retraining in design. Both started at the old Bar Hill showroom, and both are still here.
Between them they have designed hundreds of kitchens from this building. The measure of that is not the number: it is the clients who come back years later and ask for them by name. Clare now runs the showroom as well as designing in it.
Martin and Debra retire
Martin and Debra Smith retired, thirty-four years after Martin and Tony started the company. Dan now runs it. Martin may still turn up at a finished kitchen with a camera.
Over half of our new business now comes from people who were recommended to us. Each project stays with the designer who designed it, from first sketch to final photos. That continuity is the simplest explanation for why the experience is a calm one.
The people who will actually do the work
Designers, fitters, an electrician, a plumber and an administrator. Between them, several decades in this showroom.
Dan Smith
The next generation of the Smith family. Joined in 2020 and now runs day-to-day management and financial strategy.
Clare Chapman
Designing here since 2000, after a career change from coastal research. BKU Design of the Year finalist 2024. Loves architectural sketching in Promarkers, and singing, though not while measuring.
Alex Baldwin
Arrived in 2000 with a design degree and was shortlisted as Young Kitchen Designer in 2002. Cooks seriously, mostly in a combi-steam oven.
Dan Hunt
Joined in 2024 after six years in the industry. A county-cup-winning archer, which perhaps explains the precision. Also enjoys cooking, particularly in the showroom.
Rebecca Ellison
Super-organised, and with us since 2025. Keeps clients, designers and contractors in step with each other, which is the reason nobody is left wondering what happens next.
Simon Hollinshead
Our qualified electrician and a home-grown fitter, hundreds of kitchens behind him. Cycles, and restores classic cars.
David Young
A joiner before he came to kitchens in 2006, and has fitted hundreds of our kitchens in his twenty years with us. Windsurfs, surfs, or on a quiet day, fishes.
Dan Pirie
Seven years of kitchen fitting and a genuine enthusiasm for the technical side of carpentry. The one to ask about a tricky scribe.
Danny Clifton
Joined in 2026 from a tiling background. He and his wife had one of our kitchens, designed by Clare, a few years before, so he knows the process from the customer’s side too. Loves golf, and is a real people person.
With thanks to Martin and Debra Smith, who founded the company and retired in 2026. Martin may still turn up at a finished kitchen with a camera.
Judged by the industry, not by us
Our designers enter their work because the feedback is useful. The record below runs from 1996 to the 2026 Business of the Year final, and covers both the design itself and how people are treated while it is going on.
